Stakeholder Forum Hosts ‘Towards Bonn2011 Conference: The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus – Solutions for the Green Economy’ Side Event

The Federal Government of Germany and Stakeholder Forum have organised a workshop entitled “Towards Bonn2011 Conference: The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus – Solutions for the Green Economy”, which took place on 3rd September as an official side event at the 64th Annual UN DPI NGO Conference in Bonn, Germany.

The workshop attracted over 70 participants representing organisations from all over the world, and was co-moderated by Mr. Thomas Stratenwerth from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and Mr. Franz Marré from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Key note presentations were delivered by Albert Butare, former Minister of Energy and Water of the Republic of Rwanda and Co-Chair of the International Steering Committee of the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference, who discussed the relevance of the nexus approach for developing countries. This was followed by an address from Johan Kuylenstierna, Centre Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute and member of the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference International Steering Committee, who introduced the components of the nexus approach, the linkages between water, food and energy; and the current work towards identifying enabling factors and incentives to address these three securities.

During the second part of the workshop, participants engaged in roundtable discussions facilitated by members of the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference International Advisory Group, to input their views on the nexus and provide recommendations on how to better address the linkages between water, energy and food security.

A synthesis document and series of recommendations from this event will be available shortly.
