Sustaineo 2030: Today’s sustainable development visions, realised tomorrow

Thought-provoking “what-if” scenario describes a society founded on concepts of sustainable development

Sustaineo 2030 RZ Zuschnitt13zu9 rdax 180x125In the year 2030, one country has translated today’s better-governance efforts into a political and administrative system. The Bertelsmann Stiftung, Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, the International Institute for Sustainable Development and Novel Futures invite you on a time travel to that year. The new publication “Sustaineo 2030: Learning Sustainable Development from the Future*” will bring you to the fictional country of Sustaineo. As you travel through Sustaineo, you’ll encounter the country’s governance structures and policy instruments, all established with the goal of taking into account the concept of sustainable development.

Sustaineo 2030 is not a parallel universe in which technology and social systems have been invented entirely anew. On the contrary; the text is based on real experiences that have been examined as part of the global study “Winning Strategies for a Sustainable Future” carried out by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the International Institute for Sustainable Development. The project sought out successful sustainable development strategies and analysed the reasons for their success.

These best practices have been translated into the Utopian narrative of Sustaineo. A Multistakeholder Council provides the country with the vision and tools to ensure that the country embodies the principles of sustainable development at all levels. A Policy, Planning and Partnership Commission helps ensure collaboration  across all levels of government. And a Sustainability Audit Office and an Ombudsperson represent future generations, tasked with ensuring that the country does not fall asleep at the wheel.

Launched at the United Nations Sustainable Development Transition Forum in Incheon, South Korea, the Sustaineo 2030 novella is a joint production of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and Novel Futures.   The journey to Sustaineo is a contribution to the ongoing post-2015 debate.
