Water and Oceans

For this first day of the third round of ‘informal informals’ negotiations in New York, we have focused on a core theme within the Rio+20 discussions, that of Water and Oceans. We have a diverse range of insights, from Karin Lexén’s (Stockholm International Water Institute) ‘Water: The bloodstream of the green economy’, giving a clear outline of action required on water at Rio, and Flavia Loures and Stuart Orr’s (WWF) article on ‘WWF’s freshwater goals and priorities for Rio+20’, to Shrikant Daji Limaye’s (UNESCO-IUGS-IGCP Project GROWNET) ‘In future, we want less talk and more actions at field level’. Finally, the opening page of this edition gives an outline of our plans for Outreach this week, including themes and content deadlines…

Quote of the day

Civil society organisations and human rights experts the world over agree on the importance of human rights to ensure a future where every single individual enjoys access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Now, on the first day of the third round of ‘informal informals’, we are calling loud and clear with a united voice: “States must recommit to the human right to water and sanitation to achieve true sustainable development.

Marta Lobo and Isabella Montgomery Freshwater Action Network

Outreach is a multi-stakeholder magazine which is published daily at Rio+20 Intersessional and Preparatory Meetings. The articles written are intended to reflect those of the authors alone or where indicated a coalition’s opinion. An individual’s article is the opinion of that author alone, and does not reflect the opinions of all stakeholders.
