Stakeholder Engagement for the Sustainable Development Goals Open Working Group

“Stakeholder Forum welcomes the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Open Working  Group (OWG), and the fact that it will begin its work imminently. The SDGs are a key opportunity to actualise high priority action to achieve sustainable development through a performance management framework that is both global in nature and universal in scope. Given the monumental nature of the task to set global goals in order to put humanity on a more sustainable footing while eradicating poverty, there is not a moment to lose.

Despite the urgency, it is vital that governments ensure stakeholders are fully involved throughout the process to design the SDGs. Stakeholder participation, input and ideas will create better, more sustainable goals as well as ensure legitimacy of the final decisions. Formal mechanisms must be established by the SDGs OWG for stakeholder engagement, and proposals by stakeholders on the SDGs must be given due consideration.”
